A Somali news and radio station that publishes in two languages at once. Six plugins written from nothing: translation at the moment of publishing, a spoken bulletin in the masthead, and a newsroom that stays fast on a cheap Android over weak data.

Somali has almost no publishing tooling. Everything you can see here had to be built rather than installed.

A sales and lettings platform for Nairobi and Mombasa. The theme and the companion plugin were written from scratch rather than bought, so search, listings, developments, agents and enquiries behave the way the business actually works.

It carries a branded Agent Portal, an assistant that answers in English, Somali or Kiswahili, and a live visitor monitor. The data model follows an industry standard, so the client is never locked to me.

akhri.tech · live, behind a member code

A subscription reading app on its own server, with no third-party service behind any part of it. It reads PDF and EPUB, turns a page into Somali, English or Arabic with one tap, reads aloud, and works on a five-year-old phone.

Sign-in, member codes, the shop page, the payment instructions and the owner dashboard were all written in house — and it builds proper EPUBs from a client's manuscript, right-to-left Arabic included.

Click-to-play walkthrough videos, and viewing requests that convert time zones — for agents whose buyers are in a different country from their staff. Reviewed by the WordPress plugin team and published in the official directory, where anyone can install it.

Getting into that directory means the code passed somebody else's standards, not just mine. That is the part worth checking.

The assistant

The chat in the corner of this page is mine — I wrote it, and it runs on my own server, not on somebody's monthly plan. It answers questions about the work, the prices and what is possible, in whatever language it is written to, and it hands people over to me rather than pretending to be me.

Everything it knows sits in one plain text file. Changing what it says about your business is editing that file — no training, no data science, no waiting for anyone. That is why it suits an agency, a clinic, a letting office, a shop: the person who knows the business can keep it right themselves.

This website.

There is no WordPress under this page. No page builder, no theme, no plugins, no monthly platform. It is written by hand and it sits on a Linux server I run myself, with automatic HTTPS and a small Python service behind it doing the assistant, the translation and this form — about four hundred lines, standard library only, nothing bought in.

That is why it opens the moment you touch it. There is no database to query before the first word appears, no twenty plugins loading, nobody’s script watching you. If you want a site like this one, that is a thing I sell — and you have already spent a few minutes testing it.

WordPress plugins

Twenty plugins, written from nothing.

Not settings inside somebody else’s plugin — twenty separate pieces of software, written in PHP against the WordPress API and running in production today. This is the list, and what each one actually does.

RKG LuqadOne newsroom in two languages instead of two websites. It reads the visitor’s language, filters the site to it, and pairs every story with its translation.
RKG TurjumaanThe translation engine behind it, tuned for the way radio news is actually written in Somali, with its own glossary of names and terms.
RKG CodkaGives every article a spoken version, from a separate reading script so numbers and abbreviations are said properly rather than spelled out.
Warbixinta OtomaatiggaBuilds the daily bulletin on its own — picks the day’s stories, writes them into the fixed running order, and reads them aloud.
FiidiyowTurns a recorded bulletin into a video for YouTube, drawing a station card and a real waveform around audio that is already on the site.
Studio Audio ConverterConverts studio recordings to MP3 in the browser before they are uploaded, so a bulletin plays on every phone rather than most of them.
AkhrisTurns a plain WordPress post into a page that reads like a modern newsroom: reading progress, live timestamps, key points.
CiyaarahaA sport section with a live scoreboard — real fixtures, live scores and full-time results, kept current on its own.
WariyeA staff-only newsroom bot. Paste the text and a photo, give one instruction in Somali or English, and it publishes. Readers never see it.
TifaftirePublishes under the newsroom’s own name instead of a WordPress username, and points the byline at the About page. Login accounts untouched.
Transmission Front PageReplaces the home page with a purpose-built front-page design and leaves every other page on the existing theme. Switch it off and the old one is back.
RKG AppTurns the site into an app a reader installs from Chrome — its own icon, no browser bar, and it still works when the signal drops.
RKG DegdegMakes a published story appear at once on every device, instead of waiting for a cache somewhere to notice.

Need a plugin that does not exist yet? If what your business needs is not in the plugin directory — or the one that is there does nine tenths of the job and then stops — that is exactly this work. Under the bonnet

I write the software myself.

Not a page builder and not a bought template. Here is a piece of a working tool of mine, exactly as it is on disk — it takes the mess a video caption track arrives in and puts it back into paragraphs a person can read.

Type English. Get seven languages.

Somali and Arabic are the hard ones — the pieces most developers quietly refuse. The engine runs on my own server, and the same one publishes a whole news site in two languages at once and turns a page of a book into Arabic with one tap.

Need your site in two languages? That is the same machinery, and it is already built and running — Raadiyo 5 publishes every story in two languages at the moment it is posted. Which pair you want is the easy part.

What is that monthly fee really costing you?

Wix, Squarespace, a funnel builder, an app subscription. Put the number in and see it over three years, against owning the same thing outright.

£2,760 over three years, and you still would not own it. Owning it: £1,080 — a Starter site plus three years of hosting. You keep £1,680.

Rough, and honest about it: your site may need the £1,800 tier instead. The arithmetic does not change much.

What I do

WordPress development, and the awkward half nobody else wants.

Anyone can install a theme. These are the jobs that usually come back with "that is not really what we do".

Sites with no platform behind them at allWritten by hand — no WordPress, no page builder, no monthly platform, nothing to update and nothing to break. They still do things: forms, calculators, assistants, live demonstrations. The page you are reading is one, and it is the fastest thing I could give a visitor on a weak connection.
Web platforms and applicationsWordPress built properly — custom themes and plugins, not a bought theme bent into shape. And applications where WordPress is the wrong answer.
Payments in any marketTaking money properly: Stripe, PayPal and WooCommerce checkouts, subscriptions and invoices — plus the rails most developers decline, like mobile money, bank transfer, and markets where the card never arrives. Card details never touch your server.
AI language and speechSites in two languages, translation, text to speech and assistants — including languages the big providers barely support. Shipped in Somali, Arabic, Kiswahili and English; the same machinery takes any pair you need.
Your website, installable as an appOn Android a visitor gets a real Install button and your site lands on their home screen with your icon — no app store, no developer account, no review. Apple does not allow that prompt, so on iPhone I build the panel that shows them Add to Home Screen. Raadiyo 5 and Akhri both do it today.

Turn a manuscript into a real book

An EPUB people can read on a phone, and a print-ready PDF the printer will accept. From a Word file, a PDF, or photographs of a printed book. Your own cover cleaned up — never replaced with something that is not yours.

Most of what I have built started because something did not exist. There was no decent publishing tooling for Somali, so I wrote it. There was no reading app that handled three scripts on a cheap phone, so I built one. That is the kind of work I am good at: the part where the ready-made answer runs out.

I will tell you when a project is not worth doing, or when something cheaper would serve you better. It costs me the odd sale and saves everyone the bad ones.
